Albany’s third Bishop, Thomas Martin Aloysius Burke guided the Church of Albany into the 20^th century and greatly expanded the number of parishes, schools, hospitals and works of charity. This gentle and diminutive shepherd was revered and loved by people of all denominations.

The Bishop’s Appeal began in 1955 under Bishop William A Scully, as a means to raise the needed revenue to expand and operate the Church, commensurate to the needs of a modern day world.

Every year hence, people in parishes across the diocese have come forward to support this annual request for funding the programs and services of the Church. Each generation over time has contributed to a legacy, built of faith, which it passes onto the next generation to follow.

1847 was the year the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany was established under our first Bishop John McCloskey, covering a territory that then included the present day Dioceses of Ogdensburg and Syracuse. In over 160 years the Church has left an indelible imprint of Faith, Hope and Charity on generations of people. The 1847 Society celebrates this legacy and is committed to continuing the work of the Church in carrying forth the mission of Jesus Christ to serve those in need today and the generations to come.
